Guitar Guys (Gunter and Travis --- Sorry, Brad. :D )
Hey, guys. I'm sure you've already checked out your Myspace page, but I want to once again say: PHENOMENAL JOB Saturday night at Southport Hall in New Orleans!!!

I briefly got to talk to Travis about his setup before the show, but didn't get to talk to Gunter about his (although I burned my fingers with my lighter getting close enough to the stage to set his guitar on fire -- he was doing a good-enough job setting it on fire --- during his Comfortably Numb and On the Turning Away solos. :D

I've been playing PF covers (mostly all of the lead parts) for the last 15 years -- some on stage, some in my bedroom.. hahahha (Now, it's just on my Hiwatt Hi-Gain 50 2x12 Combo in my music room at my house. Woo! I'm a bedroom musician! My wife hates me :( ) so I had some pretty detailed questions about you guys' setups. :D I'll try to make this as short as possible :D

Travis and Gunter, I noticed you guys used Reeves Custom 50s and I think Travis used a Plexi and Gunter used a Mesa as well.

What speakers in the 4x12 cab are you using for your setups? Purples? Greenbacks? Vintage 30s? Fane?

Are you guys using NOS tubes in your rigs or reissue tubes? JJs? Mullards? The amps sounded phenominal!

Gunter:
I didn't have enough time before the show and I was too drunk to remember/check out your pedal setup after the show (although I did see a rack unit of some sort) but I vaguely remember seeing a Dunlop version of a Univibe. What other gear are you using for overdrive, fuzz, distortion, and modulation?

Travis:
Are you using the Tube Driver as a volume boost BEFORE the Muff and Rat? I've always found that you can really color/drive the Muff/Rat if you put the Tube Driver AFTER them and use it as a volume/drive boost (Actually I have a BK Buter Real Tube --- Not a Tube Driver, but it's basically the same pedal -- I put a 12AX7-R in it to warm it up and take out some of the gain) but I've never turned up the Hiwatt more than 1/2 way in my house and that's only when the wife/kid is away grocery shopping or whatever :D

Anyway, it sounds really muddy to me when I put the Real Tube before the Rat/Muff, but it sounded great out live on your setup! It's driving me crazy! Haha! Anyway, for the Rat settings, I'm putting everything around 2 o'clock, the Big Muff stays around 2 o'clock for the volume and 3 o'clock for the tone and sustain. The Real Tube is about 12 o'clock on the high, 4 o'clock on the low, and 3 o'clock on the mid (Tube Drivers don't have mid) as well as 12 o'clock on the volume and about 8 o'clock on the tube drive.

Guess you'll have to get a Cornish G-2 when you guys do some On an Island covers? :D $$$$$$$ Cha CHING!

I'm sure I'll have about 10000 more questions about gear, but I'll let you guys answer these first :D

Shine On!

Hey Mike,

sorry for the long delay in responding.. Been recovering from the latest tour

It was great to meet you in New Orleans.. Glad you enjoyed the show..
Keep the questions coming. We love talking about gear.. I am a total gear head freak!

You are right, Gunter and I both use the Reeves custom 50's. I know you are probably familiar with them. They are made by the same person that made the original Hiwatts.. We looked at both the Reeves and the Harry Joyce amp (which also helped build the Hiwatts) but like the Reeves better.  Gunter also bought a Reeves 4x12 cab, which I will be doing soon. I love the tone it gets.. His cab has special designed Reeves speakers.. I can't remember what they are called, but I'm sure when Gunter replies he will remember.  For my main cab I use a vintage Marshall 4x12 with 25w greenbacks.  I also use the Marshall Plexi 50watt head and another Marshall 4x12 with 75 watt celestions.

As far as the pedals: I have two tube drivers. The first one in the chain is a BK Butler which he hand built.  The second one is a Chandler, which I learned from talking to BK that he was making for Chandler, then they tried to claim that they were making them, so BK sued Chandler over this.. Anyways you are correct, basically the same pedal.  I tried putting it both ways. Behind the muff and rat and in front and I like them in front.  Also, I believe that is how Gilmour runs his set up too.. I really only use the Chandler as a volume boost. I use the BK on every distortion setting I run.  I use the muff the second most.
So my order is: comp, BK, Chandler, Muff, rat, EQ, tremelo, Univibe (original), mistress, volume ped, delay, amp.
After talking to Pete Cornish, he said delay should be last in chain..  And yes I would love some of Pete's pedals.. maybe one day!!

keep the questions coming.. We look forward to seeing you guys at the next New Orleans show!

Shine On,
Travis

Re: Guitar Guys (Gunter and Travis --- Sorry, Brad. :D )
Yeah, I agree. Delay should be last IMO because you want to reproduce the sound that you've created in its entirety.

What about tubes? You guys using NOS or new reissue stuff?

I have G12K-100s in my Hiwatt http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/classic/detail.asp?ID=32 They are very very boomy and loud and stay clean forever --- wayyyy too loud for inside my house. I'd love to get back on stage one day -- I just have no idea when I'll have time :D

What's that big green pedal you're using? Some sort of Line6 Pedal? That's kind of odd sticking something like a Line6 in the middle of a bunch of boutique pedals (/snob-mode off). Hahahahaha.

I'll definitely be at the next show and I'll try and bring a bunch of people! You guys are badass!

If you have a second, I have about 50 videos of various Pink Floyd/David Gilmour solos on my YouTube page. I ran out of songs :(
Haha.

A few decent ones:

There's a shitload on my page: Some are good, some are just decent. (Maybe I'm too critical) I'll eventually get around to re-recording some. :)

Hey Mike,

Yep the tubes are what came with the Reeves amp. we haven't changed them and will only use the same ones!

as far as that big green thing that weights down my pedal board. you are correct its a line 6.  Unfortunately I haven't found anything that allows 3 delay setting that isn't a rack unit.. Which is what I may end up going to anyways.. I am having issues with the line 6.. I used to use (and still have a Echoplex).. I have thought about bringing that back, but I can't get it quiet enough.. I may have my guy that services my pedals take a look at it and see if he can do anything.. I actually used to have an Binson Echorec, but it needed restoring and I just didn't have the time to work on it, so I sold it

oh well, maybe next show you will see me with the echoplex or something different!

Shine on,
Travis

Awesome :)

Have you checked out the MXR Carbon Copy? That gives a pretty nice analog delay up to 600ms and also has a built-in adjustable modulation effect!! That's what I use and it's pretty straightforward. You can probably switch delay length in a matter of seconds between songs if you wanted to get rid of that Line6. The sound is along the lines of an EH Deluxe Memory Man.

I'm using the factory tubes in my Hiwatt as well, but I have no idea what kind they are.. they kinda look like JJs, but they only say "HIWATT" on them.... last time I checked, HIWATT didn't make tubes.. haha.

Hey Mike! Thanks so much for the positive feedback - we really love to hear from people - good or bad but the good is always a little easier - ha ha! Anyway, I do use the uni-vibe and the russian big muff, ratt - a green ibanez tube screamer that ive had for years a- and love. My rack is a compressor/sustainer and delay unit. My marshall cab has vintage greenbacks in it and the reeves just plain smokes it - so clean and syrupy! Love it love it! Anyway - thanks again - will post more asap.

Haha. That's awesome, Gman. :)

Keep on rockin', bro. Those PF solos are RAD. From one veteran guitar player to another, I was honestly moved by not only the tone of your guitar but the feeling you put forth and the relaxation and apparent natural ability that you possess when you play.

Awesome, brother. Simply awesome.

You motherfockers are simply badass. The entire band is just SO talented. :) My wife and I were sitting at the table with Vince's wife and friends. I had no idea what to expect when you guys came on, but GOD DAMN. EVERYONE in BITW is super super talented -- I truly mean that.

Hugs and Kisses and Rainbow Ponies and Cherries and Marshmellows,

Hey, guys... scratch the MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay. Mine just went out after a month and a half of ownership... Now I have to fight with Dunlop to see WTF they are going to do about it :(

After reading reviews on the internet, it seems that this pedal absolutely HATES static electricity -- even static electricity created by plugging/unplugging the instrument cables. :( :(

Damnit.
